ZUNI, NM (Aug. 13, 2024) — The Zuni Youth Enrichment Project announced plans to install a 26.88-kilowatt solar array, marking a significant step towards sustainability and expanded youth programming. This initiative, in partnership with Everybody Solar, will generate 48,250 kilowatt hours of electricity annually, reducing both energy costs and carbon emissions
The solar installation project will allow ZYEP to redirect energy cost savings directly into youth programming, further supporting their mission to empower Zuni youth. By avoiding an estimated 74,311 of carbon dioxide emissions annually, the project also aligns with ZYEP’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.
“This solar initiative represents a pivotal moment for our organization and the Zuni community,” said Tahlia Natachu-Eriacho, executive director of ZYEP. “By harnessing clean energy, we’re not only reducing our environmental impact but also creating more opportunities for our youth to thrive. It’s a testament to our commitment to building a sustainable and vibrant future for Zuni children.”
ZYEP also plans to use the solar installation as an educational tool, conducting presentations and developing informational materials to raise awareness about renewable energy among youth and community members. This initiative builds on ZYEP’s track record of success, with 95% of youth participants reporting improved health as a result of ZYEP programs.
“We’re thrilled to collaborate with ZYEP on this impactful project. By providing clean energy solutions, we’re supporting ZYEP’s crucial work in youth development while promoting renewable energy adoption in indigenous communities,” said Myriam Scally, executive director of Everybody Solar. “This project embodies our mission to protect the environment and empower communities through solar energy.”
